Prelude to "The International"
(formerly the Tour de 'Toona)
"America's Premier Stage Road Race"
Pittsburgh, PA | July 28, 2002
Just 90 miles west of Altoona, home the Tour 'de Toona, The American Flying Mile was launched on an excellent course in the North Side of Pittsburgh, between Heinz Field, home of football's Steelers, and PNC Park, pride of baseball's Pirates. After multiple, progressive men's and women's heats, a final heat decided the top three of each gender. Also honored were the cyclists who logged the fastest overall single mile times, regardless of the heat in which it was achieved. This was the first time such as event was held as an introduction to the long time Altoona stage race. Pittsburgh was a good choice because of its late, great Thrift Drug Classic, its close proximity to Altoona, and the striking urban and natural backdrop of the course.
